Ride Info

FEBRUARY 1st 2003. Official dates for the 2003 Tahoe Gathering are July 17th to 20th. Information will be updated on this web page from time to time. Official meeting time and place info will be posted here a week or two before the event.

IMPORTANT!...You will need to bring lots of food and water on all of these rides. As much as you can carry. It is essential that you have tires that are good in loose conditions. The wider the better.

This year's Tahoe Gathering promises to be another epic group ride event. Camping and lodging in the Tahoe area are abundant, but the best places go fast, especially if you are hoping to camp in some of the premium areas. Many of us will be camping at Emerald Bay State Park once again this year. This is a beautiful campground with SHOWERS. As of February 1st there are still 50 sites available. You can reserve sites at this campground as well as neighboring DL Bliss at www.reserveamerica.com.

As most of you probably know, these gatherings are pretty informal. There are no races or sanctioned events, just a lot of fun with others who are passionate about riding their mountain Bikes. Of course most of us involved owe a debt of gratitude to Francis, consumerreview.com and mtbr.com for their support in these endeavors. Buy something from their sponsors, or the hot deals page to show your support for them.

The official dates for the Tahoe 2003 gathering are Thursday July 17th to Sunday July 20th.

I (Steve, Bigboulder) with help from others will be coordinating group rides for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We are planning three epic rides that will cover a total of 70+ miles in three days. It doesn’t sound like much but, most of the time you will be above 8,000 feet with a max elevation of 10,000ft. Gasp! The views are STUNNING from almost every section of trail. BRING A CAMERA. Trail conditions here require tires in new or almost new condition. It’s a mixed bag of sandy loam, decomposed granite, fir mulch and large granite boulders.

It would be best to arrive in the Tahoe area on Thursday to become acclimated to the elevation.

Not-Yet-Official Ride Schedule

Thursday July 17th - no rides scheduled - We'll Meet at a local establishment South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150 (916) 544-2739 at around 6:30 or 7 maybe around 7:30pm to get acquainted with a beer or two (heheh).

Friday July 18th - We'll be using a local shuttle company (cost $20) to deliver us from the casino area to Mt Rose. This is an all day ride and we will begin shuttleing at 8am. You MUST respond to me at (Steve, Bigboulder) if you want to be on this shuttle. We need a head count by June 20th.

Mount Rose to Nevada Beach; 33 plus miles. This ride will include The Great Flume Trail, Spooner to Kingsbury, and “Chinese Downhill”. Lots of fun technical single track with bouldery drop offs, great views of the lake and lots of photo ops. Take it easy on this day...save some for tomorrows ride.

Saturday July 19th - We will be leaving some vehicles at the bottom of Mr. Toad's (Oneidas Road). The actual Meeting place will be anounced. We will then shuttle up to the top of Kingsbury Grade at Heavenly and The TRT. This will require A lOT of coordination...so be on time! (time tba).

THE PUNISHER! Heavenly to Mr. Toad's. 23miles. This ride will live up to it’s name. Last year some riders completed this in just under 8 hours. Three summits above 9,000ft. Freel Pass at 10,000ft. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride as the grand finale. EPIC! See the pictures of Saturdays ride above.

On Saturday night we'll have a little get-together back somewhere in South Lake Tahoe, complete with swag drawing! Time TBA...

Sunday July 20th - Local Flavor Ride. A special version of the Round Lake, Dardanelles Lake, Christmas Valley Ride, lead by Tahoe locals. It’s hard to believe that any ride could be more scenic than the previous two days but, IT’S TRUE!

Camping and Lodging in the Tahoe Area

If you plan to camp in the Tahoe area...I hope you have already made reservations (only partly joking). Some of us who already have reserved campsites are staying at Emerald Bay State Park. AS OF Feb 1st THERE ARE STILL SITES AVALABLE! You can make reservations at reserveamerica.com There are other places to camp of course. If you need help you can email me at bigboulder2002@juno.com. If you're into the rented condo, motel or hotel casino action there is a lot of that, but again, reserve now!
